The 2024 Write to End Violence Against Women Awards
Shortlist Announcement: Celebrating Excellence in Journalism
The Write to End Violence Against Women Awards recognises journalism that addresses men’s violence against women and girls with sensitivity and insight. Our initiative takes a stand against media that prioritises sensationalism, choosing instead to champion thoughtful, nuanced storytelling that honours the experiences of those affected by violence against women and girls (VAWG).
Working hand in hand, Zero Tolerance and the End Violence Against Women Coalition are hosting these awards to recognise journalism that makes a difference. As we enter our 12th year, we’re proud of how these awards have become an important platform to recognise responsible reporting in Britain.
What sets our awards apart? Each year, we bring together an expert steering group and a panel of judges from across British media and the women’s sector. They carefully consider each submission against our exacting standards. They’re looking for that special combination of brilliant writing, adherence to Zero Tolerance’s Media Guidelines, and that ‘wow factor’ – the ability to help readers truly grasp the lived experiences of women and girls facing violence, encouraging deeper understanding and empathy.
We’re delighted to present outstanding writing across five categories:
- News
- Features
- Opinion and Comment
- Broadcast – Experts’ Pick
- Best Investigation

BROADCAST EXPERTS’ PICK
To be announced
The pieces that have made our 2024 shortlist are examples of responsible writing. They’ve caught our eye not just for their factual reporting, but for their ability to tell the real story about violence against women and girls. These journalists have shown sensitivity, treating survivors’ stories with the complexity and respect they deserve, rather than reducing them to shocking headlines.
The shortlisted works effectively connect individual stories to broader societal contexts, examining how various factors contribute to this complex issue. The journalists demonstrate professional judgement in their reporting, providing balanced coverage that both informs readers and supports those affected.
These writers understand the responsibility they carry. Their careful, compassionate reporting builds bridges of understanding, challenges long-held misconceptions, and offers a supportive hand to survivors who might be considering seeking help.
To our brilliant nominees – we raise a glass to your courage and skill in bringing these vital stories to light!
