Remembering Evelyn Gillan: a force for good

Remembering Evelyn Gillan: a force for good

"The value of any legacy is the extent to which people pick up the baton and carry on with it.” We are carrying that baton to this day. Everyone who works and volunteers at Zero Tolerance now is grateful for Evelyn’s amazing work, and mindful of the fact that we are carrying her legacy – we know that it is a privilege.

Sexual Entertainment Venues: a new law and a chance for change

Sexual Entertainment Venues: a new law and a chance for change

Zero Tolerance thinks that these venues contribute to a sleazy, sexist, objectifying culture, which normalises gender inequality and increases violence against women. We would rather they didn’t exist. But, sometimes, change comes in increments.

Zero Tolerance supports ICchange campaign demanding David Cameron ratify the Istanbul Convention on VAW

Zero Tolerance joins ICchange in calling on David Cameron to ratify the Istanbul Convention and demonstrate that his government see preventing men’s violence against women as a priority – not as something that can put off for a more ‘convenient’ time.

“Sexual Entertainment Venues”: Where are we now?

Here at Zero Tolerance, we’re keeping tabs on various developments including the Scottish Government’s consultation on a new domestic abuse offence; legislation on Human Trafficking; and legislation to create a new licensing regime for Sexual Entertainment Venues (SEVs). This blog is an update on the last of these – SEVs, or lap-dancing clubs, as most people call them.

A Living Rent is part and parcel of violence against women prevention

A Living Rent is part and parcel of violence against women prevention

At Zero Tolerance we recognise that prevention of men’s violence against women is a task with many facets. Gender inequality, the cause and consequence of men’s violence against women, reaches into every aspect of women’s lives – including the places that we live. The provision of affordable, secure housing is fundamental to violence against women prevention, which is why we have recently affiliated to the Living Rent Campaign.

Women at the sharp end of welfare ‘reform’

Women at the sharp end of welfare ‘reform’

As more and more voices are sounding concerns about the austerity agenda that is currently driving many social policies, Zero Tolerance is particularly alarmed about the effect those policies will have on women.
Welfare ‘reform’ as it is happening currently in the UK is essentially the imposition of significant cuts in social security: £26 billion worth of cuts have been made to benefits, tax credits, pay and pensions since 2010.

Challenging violence against women with an air weapons license?

Challenging violence against women with an air weapons license?

"Concern with a small subsection in a bill to licence air weapons might seem far removed from our usual work of supporting early years workers to challenge gender inequality, ortraining youth workers to challenge abuse and exploitation in teen relationships; however there are important connections to be made."
