Report to further the support available to women, children and young people who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation in Moray

Stronger Safer Families is a CHILDREN 1ST service working across Moray with children and young people and their families who have experienced sexual, physical, emotional abuse and/or neglect. The service for families has been in operation since 2003 and is funded by the Scottish Government until March 2015. We provide therapeutic support to mothers with the aim of enabling them to keep themselves and their children safer and healthier. The service is available to those affected by domestic abuse covering emotional, physical or sexual abuse and/or who have unresolved issues from abuse they experienced in childhood.

We were commissioned by the Scottish Government Equality Unit to write this report as part of our project plan for the Stronger Safer Families’ service. We set out to determine how to improve the support available to women, children and young people who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation including, trafficking, prostitution and pornography. This investigation was carried out between January and April 2013.

The position of CHILDREN 1ST is that any type of child sexual exploitation whether commercially motivated or not is exploitative behaviour and constitutes sexual abuse. Our view is that sexualisation of any kind can put children at risk of being coerced into commercially motivated activities. If the people affected are women, we would also consider it as violence against women.
