We’re launching this year’s Write to End Violence Against Women Awards!

by Clare McKeown, Zero Tolerance Information & Communications Officer

This blog also appeared in a slightly altered format on the Write to End Violence Against Women Awards on 18 June 2015.

We’re delighted to announce that we are now accepting entries for the 2015 Write to End Violence Against Women Awards.

There are a few changes this year that we are very excited to let you know about. We’re keen to build on the success of the first two years’ awards and reach an even wider audience this year. Zero Tolerance will be the lead organiser of event, and this year Everyday Victim BlamingEngender, and Women 50:50 will be joining NUJ ScotlandWhite Ribbon ScotlandScottish Women’s Aid, and Rape Crisis Scotland as supporters of the awards. We are also delighted to announce that The National newspaper is the media partner for the Awards.

We are also asking members of the public to get involved with the campaign from now until the event in December. There are few easy ways that you can get involved. . .

  • Submit your own or others’ writing for consideration — just be sure to first have a look at the terms and conditions here.
  • Like the Write to End VAW Awards facebook page and follow our Twitter feed.

  • Let us know if you come across great writing about Violence against Women. You can share it on the facebook page or tweet it us using the hashtag #WritetoEndVAW.

  • Don’t forget that we have a “Worst Article” category, so if you see something that makes your blood boil, let us know about that too.

We also have a few new categories this year to open up the field to even more entries. In recognition of the fact that “straight news pieces” and “comment pieces” often have different styles and aims, we have split the Best Print Journalist Article category into two separate categories this year. These categories are open to paid journalists writing either print or online, in a Scottish publication or primarily reaching a Scottish audience:

  • Best Print Journalism Article – news

  • Best Print Journalism Article – comment & features

As in previous years, we also have the following categories to open up the opportunities for unpaid writers or writers just starting out:

  • Best Student Article

  • Best Blog

  • Worst Article

Finally, we are also introducing an annual themed gender equality award. At Zero Tolerance we know that  men’s violence against women is caused by gender inequality, and that it helps this inequality to continue. So we want to reward writers who help expose and redress that gender inequality.

As this year’s award falls between two elections that prominently feature women –with some rather shocking press coverage at times — this year’s”Gender Equality Award” is themed around Political Reporting and is being sponsoredWomen 50:50.

So, if you’ve seen some great political reporting about women this year, we urge you to submit it for consideration for the:
