CJSW Briefing Paper 19: Taking Stock of Alternatives to Secure Accommodation or Custody for Girls and Young Women in Scotland

This briefing paper is based on the small scale scoping study reporting on existing knowledge about girls and young women at risk of secure care or custody in Scotland. The impetus for the study came from the work of the Vulnerable Girls and Young Women’s Champions Group and the profiling exercise undertaken in an attempt to obtain a better understanding of the needs and vulnerabilities of girls and young women involved in, or on the periphery of, the youth justice system. The Champions Group, which reports directly to the Scottish Government led National Youth Justice Strategy Group, has been welcomed as an important contributor to the discussion of the place of girls and young women in youth justice services (Burman and Batchelor 2009), and aims to inform the development of appropriate and effective strategies and to promote best practice in working with girls and young women.
