Criminalisation of the Purchase and Sale of Sex

Response from Zero Tolerance to the consultation on Trish Godman's proposed member's Bill, February 2010

The response from Zero Tolerance to a consultation on a proposed member’s bill on the Criminalisation of the Purchase and Sale of Sex, issued by Trish Godman MSP is now available on the VAW prevention network website. We strongly support moves to challenge demand for prostitution in Scotland and welcome the proposal to criminalise the purchaser of sex, who has been invisible and unchallenged for too long.

Please also circulate it through your own networks as you wish and urge them to take action and respond too.

Please feel free to borrow, adapt or copy certain sections of this paper to make your own response. It is crucial that those of us who view prostitution as a form of violence against women make our voices heard in this consultation. The pro-prostitution lobby is organised and effective, and will doubtless be making a large number of responses. We need to make a strong argument that prostitution is harmful and show MSPs that a huge body of opinion in Scotland is in favour of tackling demand. Even if you only have time to send one paragraph stating that you support the criminalisation of purchasers of sex and the proposals to prohibit advertising and facilitating prostitution with very brief reasons that would be helpful. If you have time to add your own comments, experiences, views or any new angle on this issue that would also help.

The deadline for submissions is 18 February 2011 and responses should be sent to trish.godman.msp@scottish.parliament.uk
